    Bruce Manning Metzger, the quintessential Presbyterian elder, scholar and gentleman, was one of the foremost New Testament textual critics of the 20th century. He was a major contributor to our understanding of the history of formation of the New Testament canon, an influential translator of the Biblical text and an insightful interpreter of the New Testament for modern times.

    Metzger graduated from Lebanon Valley College in and from Princeton Theological Seminary in ; he then earned a master’s degree in and a Ph.D. in in classics at Princeton University. When Metzger graduated from Princeton Seminary, he joined the faculty and ultimately served there for 46 years, the last 30 as professor of New Testament, before retiring in In Metzger married Isobel Elizabeth Mackay, the daughter of the seminary president.

    Metzger’s scholarship was flawless. While one might disagree with his conclusions on this or that issue, one would be hard put to find fault in the mass of evidence he accumulated in the fields in which he worked. His expert knowledge of the many languages necessary to do textual criticism attracted the respect of all his colleagues.

    Bruce M. Metzger () was a professor emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary and Bible editor who served on the board of the American Bible Society. He was a world-class scholar of Greek, New Testament and Old Testament Bible, and wrote prolifically on these subjects.

    Metzger was born in Middletown, Pennsylvania in He earned his BA at Lebanon Valley College in , and then entered Princeton Theological Seminary, gaining his ThB in He stayed on at Princeton as Teaching Fellow in New Testament Greek. The following year, he was ordained in the United Presbyterian Church. In , he earned his MA and became Instructor in New Testament. Two years later, Metzger completed his PhD, also at Princeton Seminary.

    In , Metzger married Isobel Elizabeth Mackay, daughter of the third president of the Seminary, Alexander Mackay. That same year, he was promoted to Assistant Professor. By , he was associate professor, and became full professor in In , Metzger's chair was named George L. Collord Professor of New Testament Language and Literature.
