Jerry and Homerline Clower of Amite County were married for 50 years, and no two humans could have been more different.
A country comedian who was a regular on the Grand Ole Opry, Jerry loved the spotlight. His favorite suit was red as red can be. His voice was always turned up to full volume.
Homerline, a soft-spoken woman who enjoyed teaching Sunday School, did everything possible to avoid attention.
Doris Homerline Clower died Saturday at age 91. She was preceded in death by Jerry (Aug. 24, 1998) and their son, Ray (Nov. 27, 2011).
I knew Jerry Clower for years. He sent both my sons a pair of toddler-sized overalls when they were born, and it wasn't unusual to see Jerry going from desk to desk in the Clarion Ledger newsroom, visiting with those he knew and those he didn't.
I only met Homerline once — when I was writing a story about how the town of Liberty was still grieving Jerry months after his death. I phoned ahead and asked if I could stop by and interview her.
"I don't do interviews," she said firmly but politely.
"Can I stop by and say hello?" I asked.
"Yeah. But I don't do interviews," she said.
