Last month Aliya Mustafina announced her divorce from Alexei Zaitsev on Instagram and said that she would not give any additional information besides what was already written in the post. However, her father, Fargat Mustafin, recently agreed to talk to a Russian tabloid EG.ru.
Q: Fargat, what happened? Why did your daughter file for divorce?
A: Ah, both are fooling around. They all feel like they’re immortal, like the sky is the limit! And with their strong personalities. Aliya says that her love for him has passed.
Q: So, she fell out of love, then? That was pretty fast.
A: Lyoshka is a normal guy, with ambitions. He’s stupid according to his age. He’s 24 years old. He can be irreverent. For example, he can easily pat me on the shoulder approvingly.
Q: Really?
A: Kind of informality, fraternization. He does it without any bad intentions. And generally, he’s a good young man. You know I was against them splitting up. Aliya and Lyoshka have been living separately for half a year already. My daughter didn’t want to make it public. She’s only recently announced it on Instagram.

Aliya Mustafina spent the last week training in Penza – the city where her main coach, Sergei Starkin, works. Local news filmed a feature about her training and talked to the gymnast herself and to one of her coaches, Pavel Pavlov. Yes, the very same Pavel Pavlov who Aliya used to date. Pavlov was a competitive gymnast of the national team for a number of years but apparently switched to coaching. He is now a member of Strakin’s coaching team and as such commented on Mustafina’s current progress, saying that she’s already doing about 70-70% of her difficulty.
Mustafina also commented on the fact that the training is still harder for her than it was before a break even though she’s been training for a few months now:
“For gymnastics, a year is a long break so the recovery is not going easy. I can’t say that the training is as easy as it was before [the break]”.
