Donita Sparks is an American musician best known as the frontwoman, co-founder, singer and guitarist for grunge/riot grrrl band L7. She is also the drummer for Lou Man Group, a Lou Reed tribute band.
History[]
Donita Sparks was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 3, She raised in Chicago, Illinois by a politically active family, and worked as a foot messenger while there. At the age of 19, she moved to Los Angeles, California where she met Suzi Gardner two years later. Gardner had provided backing focals for "Slip In it" by Black Flag. She and Gardner formed L7 in , and released their debut album in In , around the time they released their second album, Smell the Magic, Sparks and L7 formed Rock for Choice, a Pro-Choice organization that would be supported by some iconic rock bands of the 90's, including Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The band then released their third album, Bricks Are Heavy, in under the production of Butch Vig, who produced Nirvana's hit album Nevermind.
Around the time of the release of Bricks are Heavy, Sparks gained controversy over a negative reaction in when L7 performed at the Reading Festival and the speakers blew out. Donita Sparks (born 8 April , Chicago, Illinois) is a vocalist, guitarist and song-writer in Los Angeles. Donita is the co-founder, along with Suzi Gardner of grunge/punk/rock and roll band L7. Often mistakenly catergorized as a riot grrrl group, L7 actually formed in , pre-dating that movement by almost a decade. After a few line-up changes, Jennifer Finch (Vocals, Bass) joined in Dee Plakas became the band's definitive drummer in November of L7 released six studio albums, one live album, and one greatest hits release. In , Sparks, along with L7 bandmates, founded Rock for Choice, a pro-choice concert event orginazation that exists to this day. Sparks also contributed to The New Yorker Outloud cd series, composing the score for the "Brokeback Mountain" segment in In and , Sparks began composing soundtrack material and scoring, including the recent feature film biopic "The Life of Reilly" , starring Charles Nelson Reilly. Since June of , Sparks has been touring with her eponymously named solo project. Sparks is currently in the studio recording her first solo cd.
