This week also marks the beginning of a new academic year for students at elementary, junior high and high schools in Indonesia.
For years, there has been much debate about Indonesia's education system. Many have criticized the long school hours, which exhaust young students and rob them of time with their families and friends. The system also puts too much emphasis on rote learning, without encouraging them to think critically.
On the other hand, our education system has also borne good fruit. Many Indonesian researchers have won international grants and scholarships for their studies. A lot of young students have won international olympiads in mathematics and science. Very recently, Indonesia brought home one gold, two silver and one bronze medal from the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) which was held in Aarhus, Denmark, in mid-July 2015.
Our education system has also been criticized for its little emphasis on character building. Teenage brawls, drug abuse and juvenile delinquents are in the news each day, all painting a very bleak portrait of Indonesia's young generation.

Anies Rasyid Baswedan (Indonesian pronunciation:[ˈanɪsbaˈswɛdan], born 7 May 1969) is an Indonesian academic, activist, and politician who served as the Governor of Jakarta from 2017 to 2022. A student activist and political analyst before entering public service, he served as the Rector of Paramadina University before being appointed to be Minister of Education and Culture in Joko Widodo administration. He is also the founder of Indonesia Mengajar, a program that selects, trains, and assigns university graduates to serve in a one-year teaching mission across the country. He is the grandson of nationalist, journalist, and freedom fighter Abdurrahman Baswedan, and the cousin of Novel Baswedan.[2][3][4] He was a candidate for President of Indonesia in the 2024 election.
Early life and education
